Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of four planned sequels to the 2009 film
Avatar, released on December 16, 2022. It is directed by James Cameron,
produced by Lightstorm Entertainment, and distributed by 20th Century
Studios. The Way of Water is set 15 years after the events of the first film.
Due to a one year time skip during the story, most of the film's events are
set in 2170. Similar to the first film, the story is set across months with
only the more important scenes being shown.[3]The Way of Water follows the
journey of Jake Sully and Neytiri's newfound family of five children. Despite
their best efforts to keep their family together, a familiar threat resurfaces
because Earth is dying, and forces the Sully family to become refugees and
flee to the land of the Metkayina clan in the Pandoran oceans. There, the
family becomes entangled in a struggle for survival. The film's plot is
intended to be a fully-encapsulated standalone narrative, as will the other
sequels, but will also be part of a meta-narrative that extends across Avatar:
The Way of Water, Avatar 3, 4 and 5
